Here you will find a small piece of the Águilas' seafaring past...
Many cultures passed through and left their mark in Águilas. Proof of this is the wealth of archaeological remains from the Roman times. From that time, lots of thermae can be found. Multiple theories claim that the ancient city of Urci can be found where Águilas is located nowadays. Specialists are looking to verify that theory.
Indeed, Romans left most of the archaeological remains and a museum and Roman thermae were created.
Águilas, known as modern city, emerges from the Enlighten thinking of King Charles III and his ministers Aranda and Floridablanca. Águilas was dependent on Lorca until nineteenth century.
Águilas history has always been closely linked to the coast and the proof is that most of its historic and artistic heritage has a special bond with his coast. This was the means through which the population got economy, help, ideas, but also the dangers. Therefore, along its 34 miles of coastline defensive bastions can be found. One the one hand, the Castillo de San Juan de las Aguilas, which has recently become a museum and on the other hand, the Torre de Cope. These two places were used to scan the horizon to warn people if new visitors were pirates.
Águilas railway marked Águilas history. During the Bourbon restoration, the town became a large British colony to output the esparto grass and minerals using the railway line Águilas-Lorca-Baza. That also lead to the creation of El Hornillo pier, a great architectural work made of iron and concrete located just opposite to Isla del Fraile. That pier boasted a revolutionary loading and unloading system for its time. From that period, you can also find a British cemetery.
With nearly 35,000 registered inhabitants, besides the floating population Águilas is the ninth town in number of inhabitants in Murcia Region. Aguilas population remains constant during the winter. Population works in industry, services, tourism and agriculture.
Águilas boasts its own micro-climate. Temperature in Águilas remains a few degrees higher in the winter, with an average over 300 days a sunshine a year.
